The short version
The fastest way to understand a welcome bonus is to read it backwards. Start at the withdrawal conditions, work back to the rollover, and only then look at the headline figure. Most of the value — or the absence of it — is decided in the clauses rather than in the number.
Read the withdrawal conditions first
A bonus balance that cannot be withdrawn until conditions are met is not money; it is a conditional stake. Find the conditions, the qualifying odds and the time limit before you assess the size of the offer.
Then check the rollover arithmetic
A rollover of a multiple applied to the bonus, the deposit, or both, changes the total stake you must place before any withdrawal. At short odds, clearing a rollover can take a very long time — and the margin on each qualifying bet is paid whether you win or lose.
Finally, look at the headline figure
Only now does the number mean anything. A large credit with a heavy rollover can be worth less than a small credit with none. The headline is the last thing to read, not the first.
